NOVEMBER 18: MEDICAL YOGA AS INTEGRATIVE HEALTH with Ina Stephens

Medical Yoga and Integrative Yoga involves employing a variety of yogic practices to help improve a health condition. Even when the disease itself cannot be cured, yoga as medicine can benefit the person with the disease in numerous ways. Among the yogic tools used therapeutically are asana (physical postures), pranayama (breathing techniques) and meditation (including mindfulness and guided imagery). These yogic practices and other holistic, integrative medicine treatments can provide many benefits to children, adolescents and adults, especially those with ongoing health problems.

Iyengar, Restorative Yoga was created for students with injuries or illness and those who could not practice the more vigorous styles of yoga. Today, Restorative Yoga is practiced in health clubs, hospitals, and yoga studios by participants who are looking for deep rest and relaxation.

Introduction to Sanskrit and the Yoga of Sound

with John Campbell, Ph.D.

“If one has knowledge of Sanskrit, then knowledge of yoga is possible as well.” Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois

Some knowledge of Sanskrit, "the language of the gods,” is essential for the study of Yoga. Just as the physical postures of āsana can energize and heal the body, mantras of Sanskrit can transform and purify one’s consciousness. In this workshop-style presentation, students learn the Sanskrit names of the poses with their underlying meanings, and are introduced to traditional Sanskrit chanting practices.
